Because of its high levels of immigration on the one hand and on the other hand the combined effect of a proselytising patriotism, the aspirational interpretation of the American Dream and the seductive consumerism of its cultural exports, the US economy works a bit like a pyramid scheme. As long as we keep beating out the same message, we will continue to get rich quick and we can make people do our cleaning for us.
