I was one of doubtless multitudes invisibly amassed at the gates of Amazon.com today at 11am Pacific, peering through the glass, breathlessly clicking refresh and hoping to get an Xbox 360 for a third of its usual price.

And that was when the whole of the Amazon.com website crashed, under the sheer weight of distributed enthusiasm. For over ten minutes Amazon in the US stopped working. Heads will roll, I bet.

And if you think that's bad, try running a health ministry that's being besieged by a militia group. It's a wonder the civil servants can get anything done. I expect the customer feedback isn't as hostile though.
