My dad made the interesting claim that Google isn't just making information accessible anymore; it's now, in effect, generating knowledge. Does a taxonomy constitute knowledge?

Anthropologists argue that knowledge isn't independent of social structure. It could be thought of as a kind of cultural competence - thus not universal but contingent. And that would argue in favour of these multiple national Google sites, each with differing results. Perhaps information is closer to knowledge when it's information that's retrieved with the folksonomy of the folk it gets used by.
