On and off since Sunday I've been trying to decide if this Jason Cowley article more closely represents the mistaken nostalgia of a disenfranchised grumpy chumps or a slightly pompous but accurate critique of today's Britain. A country that's getting unpleasant to live in; and tawdry.

Disdaining the Americanizing effect of mass culture is a popular conceit in classist Europe. Is that all this is?
