Life expectancy, literacy, education and purchasing power are all rolled into the UN Human Development Index. It provides a rough picture of the opportunities available to people in different countries to choose a life of their choosing. Here's a map based on the most recent figures. It turns out it's not a competition. It's more a reminder that the double-barrelled states of West Africa need the most attention: Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau - in that order.
