Ground effect: When planes fly near the ground (less than a wingspan away) they get much more lift for the same velocity. Here are photos of the 1987 Russian Lun-class ekranoplan, designed to fly around four meters above the surface of the Black Sea; and a video of the 550 ton "Caspian Sea Monster".
