We were trying to figure out the other day what makes some not especially beautiful people really compelling to watch and really seem to become a focal point for the energy in a room. And what I suggested was that the same things make such people compelling as makes great performance compelling. Poise, intelligence, control - intentionality. The same things that make great writing compelling - edited, directed, meant. The meaning isn't just sloughing off haphazardly, you're looking at artifice, something deliberate and constructed.
