I don't think "false consciousness" is really fair. We're rightly suspicious of ideas we know will make it harder for us to run with the pack. One thing I want from my political leaders is a coherent narrative; and it should be able to incorporate new events and information. I need symbols, projected at consistent valencies, that maintain a stable framework of meaning for my life; and which people, including myself, will fight for, serve, and act in the name of. As they like to say over at Students for ExxonMobil: it's not selling out, it's buying in.
