This morning two construction workers presented me with notice regarding rebuilding work on the house opposite. Because of the importance of gifts here, they also presented a token gift to the household (it's a small towel). We bowed.
One of the things that Japan's quite persuasive on is that acknowledging that something is a performance is fine, but it's not "merely" performance and to do so won't necessarily bring you that much closer to understanding what's going on.
