Australia mourned the passing of Steve Irwin today - "Crocodile Hunter", brave naturalist and national icon by many accounts.

Although we're a little wary of bandying about national stereotypes, we do know that "national cultures" are things people buy into and willingly participate in. We love it. In part, the nation state is a symbolic game. Digital pundits keep heralding its demise, but I think it's going to stay compelling. You wonder what makes for a workable field of play.
